Defining Meteorological Weather

Weather is what the sky and air are like right now or on a certain day.

Weather can change from morning to afternoon, or from one day to the next. It tells us what is happening outside at a time and in a place.

For example, it might be sunny and warm at your school today. But it could be rainy and cool tomorrow. That is weather.

Weather is short-term. That means it is about what happens over a short time, like today, tonight, or this week.

We can describe weather by looking at a few important things.

  • Temperature tells how hot or cold the air feels.

  • Clouds show us what the sky looks like.

Weather words help us describe what we notice outside. We might say:

Sometimes weather has more than one part at the same time. A day can be cloudy and windy. Another day can be rainy and cool.

Can the weather be different in different places at the same time?

On Monday it is sunny. On Tuesday it rains.

Did the weather stay the same or change?

Answer: The weather changed.

Weather can change from day to day.

4. Hail

Hail is made of balls or lumps of ice. Hail is usually harder and bigger than sleet.

Hail forms in storm clouds. Strong winds push ice up and down inside the cloud. More ice builds up, and then the hail falls when it gets too heavy.

Hail can be very small or sometimes much bigger. Hail is hard ice, not soft flakes.

How Temperature Changes Precipitation
