Biological Organization of the Human Body is the way our body is built from small parts to bigger parts.

Think of it like building with blocks. One small piece joins other pieces. Then those groups make something bigger. In the human body, cells make tissues, tissues make organs, and organs work together in organ systems.

All of these parts work together to help you live, grow, move, breathe, and stay healthy.

3. Organs

Different tissues join together to make an organ.

An organ is a body part that does an important job. Your heart, lungs, brain, and stomach are organs.

For example, the heart is an organ. It is made of tissues that work together to pump blood through your body.

4. Organ Systems

Several organs that work together form an organ system.

An organ system is a group of organs that do a bigger job for the body.

5. Organism

All the organ systems working together make the whole living thing, called an organism.

Many muscles are attached to bones. When they pull on bones, your body moves. That is how you can bend your arm, kick a ball, or turn your head.

Muscles and Bones Work Together

3. Cardiac Muscle

Cardiac muscle is a special muscle found only in the heart. Its job is to contract again and again to pump blood through your body.

Cardiac muscle is also involuntary. Your heart keeps beating day and night without you thinking about it.

This muscle is very important because blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body.

Voluntary and Involuntary Muscles

Your body is busy all day and all night, even when you are asleep. One body system that works all the time is the circulatory system.

The circulatory system moves blood through your body. Blood carries important things your body needs, like oxygen and nutrients. Blood also carries away waste, such as carbon dioxide.

  • Veins — carry blood back to the heart

A good way to remember this is:

The blood travels in a loop. The heart pumps blood out through arteries. After the blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body, it travels back through veins to the heart.

How Blood Helps the Body

When you breathe in, your lungs take in oxygen from the air. The blood picks up this oxygen and carries it from the lungs to the heart.

Then the heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood through arteries to all parts of the body.

As blood moves through the body, it drops off oxygen and nutrients to cells. The cells use these to make energy for living, moving, growing, and healing.

Next, the blood picks up carbon dioxide waste from the cells. The blood carries this waste back toward the heart and lungs. Then you breathe the carbon dioxide out.
