Atmospheric Composition
Atmospheric Composition means what the air around Earth is made of.
We cannot usually see air, but it is all around us. Air is a mixture of different gases. These gases work together to make Earth's atmosphere.
The atmosphere is the blanket of air around Earth. It helps living things stay alive. It gives us air to breathe, helps keep Earth warm enough, and is where weather happens.
Even though air seems empty, it is made of tiny bits of gas. Some gases are in big amounts, and some are in very small amounts.
The main gases in the atmosphere are:
- Nitrogen — the gas that makes up most of the air.
- Oxygen — the gas people and animals need to breathe.
- Trace gases — tiny amounts of other gases, like carbon dioxide.
Nitrogen is the biggest part of the air. Most of the atmosphere is nitrogen. We do not breathe nitrogen the same way we use oxygen, but it is an important part of the air.
Oxygen is the gas our bodies need. When people and animals breathe in, they take in oxygen. Plants also help make oxygen for the air.
Carbon dioxide is a trace gas. That means there is only a small amount of it in the air. People and animals breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants use carbon dioxide to make their food.
There are also a few other trace gases in the atmosphere. They are only in tiny amounts, but they are still part of the air.
A simple way to think about air is this:
- Most of it is nitrogen.
- A big smaller part is oxygen.
- A tiny bit is trace gases, like carbon dioxide.
Scientists often show the air as about 100 equal parts. Then they can talk about how much of each gas is in the air.
About 100 parts of air can be thought of like this:
- about 78 parts nitrogen
- about 21 parts oxygen
- about 1 part trace gases
We can write that as:
$$78 + 21 + 1 = 100$$
This helps us see that nitrogen is the largest part of the atmosphere.
Why is atmospheric composition important?
- Oxygen helps living things breathe.
- Carbon dioxide helps plants grow.
- The mix of gases helps make Earth a good place to live.
If the air had no oxygen, people and animals could not live the same way. If the air had no carbon dioxide, plants would not be able to make food the same way.
So, even tiny amounts of some gases can still be very important.

Question: Carbon dioxide is only in a small amount in the air. Is it a main gas in a big amount, or is it a trace gas?
Step 1: Listen for the clue: small amount.
Step 2: Small amounts of gases are called trace gases.
Answer: Carbon dioxide is a trace gas.
Worked Example 4
Question: Imagine there are 100 blocks to show the air. If 78 blocks are nitrogen and 21 blocks are oxygen, how many blocks are trace gases?
Step 1: Add the nitrogen and oxygen blocks.
$$78 + 21 = 99$$
Step 2: Find how many blocks are left out of 100.
$$100 - 99 = 1$$
Answer: 1 block is trace gases.
