Atmospheric Composition

Atmospheric Composition means what the air around Earth is made of.

We cannot usually see air, but it is all around us. Air is a mixture of different gases. These gases work together to make Earth's atmosphere.

The atmosphere is the blanket of air around Earth. It helps living things stay alive. It gives us air to breathe, helps keep Earth warm enough, and is where weather happens.

Even though air seems empty, it is made of tiny bits of gas. Some gases are in big amounts, and some are in very small amounts.

The main gases in the atmosphere are:

  • Nitrogen — the gas that makes up most of the air.
  • Oxygen — the gas people and animals need to breathe.
  • Trace gases — tiny amounts of other gases, like carbon dioxide.

Nitrogen is the biggest part of the air. Most of the atmosphere is nitrogen. We do not breathe nitrogen the same way we use oxygen, but it is an important part of the air.

Oxygen is the gas our bodies need. When people and animals breathe in, they take in oxygen. Plants also help make oxygen for the air.

Carbon dioxide is a trace gas. That means there is only a small amount of it in the air. People and animals breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants use carbon dioxide to make their food.

There are also a few other trace gases in the atmosphere. They are only in tiny amounts, but they are still part of the air.

A simple way to think about air is this:

  • Most of it is nitrogen.
  • A big smaller part is oxygen.
  • A tiny bit is trace gases, like carbon dioxide.

Scientists often show the air as about 100 equal parts. Then they can talk about how much of each gas is in the air.

About 100 parts of air can be thought of like this:

  • about 78 parts nitrogen
  • about 21 parts oxygen
  • about 1 part trace gases

We can write that as:

$$78 + 21 + 1 = 100$$

This helps us see that nitrogen is the largest part of the atmosphere.

Why is atmospheric composition important?

  • Oxygen helps living things breathe.
  • Carbon dioxide helps plants grow.
  • The mix of gases helps make Earth a good place to live.

If the air had no oxygen, people and animals could not live the same way. If the air had no carbon dioxide, plants would not be able to make food the same way.

So, even tiny amounts of some gases can still be very important.

Worked Example 4

Question: Imagine there are 100 blocks to show the air. If 78 blocks are nitrogen and 21 blocks are oxygen, how many blocks are trace gases?

Step 1: Add the nitrogen and oxygen blocks.

$$78 + 21 = 99$$

Step 2: Find how many blocks are left out of 100.

$$100 - 99 = 1$$

Answer: 1 block is trace gases.

Weather and climate are connected, but they are not the same thing. Let’s learn how to tell them apart.

What is weather?

Weather is what the air outside is like right now or over a short time.

Weather can change quickly. It might be sunny in the morning and rainy in the afternoon.

Weather tells us things like:

  • Is it sunny or cloudy?
  • Is it raining or snowing?
  • Is it windy or calm?
  • Is it warm or cold?

When someone asks, “What is the weather today?” they are asking about today, not the whole year.

What is climate?

Climate is the kind of weather a place usually has over a long, long time.

Climate does not mean just one day. It means the weather pattern we expect in a place again and again over many years.

Climate tells us things like:

  • Does this place usually have hot summers?
  • Does this place often get lots of snow in winter?
  • Is this place usually rainy or dry?
  • Is this place warm most of the year?

So, weather is about now. Climate is about usually.

An easy way to remember

  • Weather = what you get today
  • Climate = what you expect over many years

You can think of it like this:

  • Weather is today’s outfit.
  • Climate is the whole closet a place needs.

If a place is usually cold, people keep coats, hats, and gloves there. That tells us about the climate.

If you wear your rain boots today because it is raining, that tells us about the weather.

How are weather and climate different?

  1. Weather changes fast. It can change from hour to hour or day to day.
  2. Climate changes very slowly. It describes the usual weather in a place over many years.
  3. Weather is short-term. It is about now.
  4. Climate is long-term. It is about patterns over a long time.

Examples of weather

  • It is raining this afternoon.
  • Today is sunny and warm.
  • It is windy outside right now.
  • Snow is falling this morning.

Examples of climate

  • This place has cold, snowy winters.
  • This place is warm most of the year.
  • This place is usually dry and does not get much rain.
  • This place often has hot summers.

Why do we learn both?

We learn about weather to help us decide what to wear and what to do today.

We learn about climate to understand what a place is usually like. Climate helps people know what kinds of clothes, homes, plants, and activities fit a place.

For example, if a place has a snowy climate, people know they may need warm coats each winter.

If today’s weather in that same place is sunny and cold, that helps them decide what to wear today.

Worked Example 1

Question: “It is cloudy and windy today.” Is this weather or climate?

Step 1: Look for a clue word. The word today tells us it is happening now.

Step 2: Ask, “Is this about a short time or a long time?” It is about a short time.

Answer: This is weather.

Worked Example 2

Question: “This town usually has hot summers.” Is this weather or climate?

Step 1: Look for a clue word. The word usually tells us it happens again and again.

Step 2: Ask, “Is this about one day or many years?” It is about a pattern over a long time.

Answer: This is climate.

Worked Example 3

Question: A city gets snow in winter almost every year. But today it is sunny. Which part is climate, and which part is weather?

Step 1: “Gets snow in winter almost every year” tells what usually happens over a long time.

Step 2: “Today it is sunny” tells what is happening now.

Answer:

  • Snow in winter almost every year = climate
  • Sunny today = weather

Worked Example 4

Question: Mia says, “Our town has a cold climate, so every single day must be snowy.” Is Mia correct?

Step 1: Climate tells what a place is usually like.

Step 2: Weather can change from day to day.

Step 3: A cold climate does not mean every day is snowy. Some days may be sunny, cloudy, windy, or just cold.

Answer: No, Mia is not correct. Climate is the usual pattern over time, but weather is what happens each day.
