Better: How does daily smartphone use affect the attention of middle school students in class?
Too narrow: How did one 7th grade student at Lincoln Middle School use a phone during science class last Tuesday?
This is so specific that it may not provide enough information for a real research project.
6. Use question words carefully
The words you choose can improve your question. Some question starters lead to stronger research than others.
- Good for research: how, why, what effects, what factors, in what ways
- Sometimes too simple: is, are, did, can
This does not mean you can never use is or can, but questions that begin that way often lead to short answers unless they are revised.
