Formulating Inquiry Questions

Formulating Inquiry Questions means making good questions that help you learn more about a topic.

When we do research, we do not just ask any question. We ask questions that help us find new information. These are called inquiry questions.

An inquiry question is usually open-ended. That means it cannot be answered with just yes, no, or one tiny fact.

Good inquiry questions help you explore, wonder, and discover.

Why are inquiry questions important?

  • They help you stay focused on your topic.
  • They help you find facts and details.
  • They help you learn more than one simple answer.
  • They make research more interesting.

What makes a good inquiry question?

  • It is about the topic you are studying.
  • It is open-ended.

What does not make a good inquiry question?

  • A question with a yes or no answer
  • A question with only one short fact as the answer
  • A question that is too broad and hard to answer

Look at these two kinds of questions:

  • Closed question: Do bees make honey?
  • Open-ended inquiry question: How do bees make honey?

The first question can be answered with yes. The second question needs research and explanation.

Steps for making an inquiry question

  1. Pick a topic.
  2. Think about what you want to learn.
  3. Start your question with words like how, why, or what.

Question: Are frogs green?

This is not a strong inquiry question. The answer could be very short.

Better question: How do frogs use their body parts to live in water and on land?

This is better because you can research frog legs, feet, skin, and more.

Question: Is rain wet?

This is not a good inquiry question because the answer is very simple.

Better question: What causes rain to fall from clouds?

This question helps you learn about clouds, water, and weather.

Question: Do firefighters help people?

This is a yes-or-no question.

Better question: How do firefighters help keep a community safe?

Now you can research many ways firefighters help, such as putting out fires, teaching safety, and rescuing people.

Question: Do plants need water?

This question is too simple.

Better question: What do plants need to grow well?

This question can lead to learning about water, sunlight, soil, air, and space to grow.

Let’s compare strong and weak questions

  • Weak: Is a turtle an animal?
  • Strong: How does a turtle protect itself?
  • Weak: Do penguins swim?
  • Strong: How do penguins move in water and on land?
  • Weak: Is the moon in the sky?
  • Strong: Why does the moon look different at different times?

Be careful of questions that are too big

Some questions are open-ended, but they are still too hard to answer in a short research project.

For example:

Too big: How does the whole world work?

This is too broad.

Better: How do people in a community work together?

The better question is easier to research and understand.

Be careful of questions that are too small

Some questions only give one tiny answer.

Too small: What color is a school bus?

Better: Why are school buses made to look easy to see?

The better question leads to learning about safety.

A helpful check

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Can this be answered with yes or no?
  • Will I need more than one fact to answer it?
  • Can I find the answer in books, articles, videos, or by asking an expert?
  • Does it fit my topic?

If your answer is yes to the last three and no to the first one, your question is probably a good inquiry question.

Turning closed questions into inquiry questions

You can fix a weak question by changing the beginning.

  • Change Do birds build nests? to How do birds build nests?
  • Change Is recycling important? to Why is recycling important for communities?
  • Change Do whales live in the ocean? to How do whales survive in the ocean?

Try this thinking pattern

  1. Write your topic.
  2. Write a simple question.
  3. Ask, “Can this be answered with one word?”
  4. If yes, change it to a how, why, or what question.
  5. Make sure the new question asks for details.

In this lesson, you will learn about two kinds of sources:

  • Primary sources
  • Secondary sources

Knowing the difference helps you become a better researcher.

What is a source?

A source is anything that gives you information.

Sources can be many things, such as:

  • a book
  • an interview
  • a photograph
  • a letter
  • a video
  • an article

What is a primary source?

A primary source gives information from the original person, object, or time.

It is a source that is firsthand. That means it comes directly from someone who saw it, made it, said it, or lived it.

Here are some common primary sources:

  • an interview with a firefighter about the job
  • a diary written by a person
  • a letter
  • a photograph taken at the time something happened
  • an original speech
  • a map made during that time

Easy way to remember: A primary source is from the source itself.

What is a secondary source?

A secondary source gives information that was explained, retold, or organized by someone else.

It is not usually from the person who lived the event. Instead, it tells about the topic by using information from primary sources and other facts.

Here are some common secondary sources:

  • an encyclopedia
  • a textbook
  • a news article that explains past events
  • a report
  • a website that teaches about a topic

Easy way to remember: A secondary source is secondhand information.

How can you tell the difference?

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Did the person make it, see it, or live it?
    If yes, it may be a primary source.
  2. Is the source telling about something using information from other places?
    If yes, it may be a secondary source.

Look for clue words.

Why do researchers use both kinds?

Answer: It is a secondary source.

Why? The book is explaining and retelling information about the past. It is not the original airplane record or a firsthand account from the inventors.

A helpful trick

If you can say, “This came right from the person, event, or time,” then it is probably a primary source.

Be careful!

Sometimes a source can seem tricky. For example, a book can sometimes include a primary source inside it, like a real letter or a photo. In that case, the letter or photo is the primary source, even if the book itself is a secondary source.

What is skimming?

Skimming means reading quickly to get the main idea. You look over the text to see what it is mostly about.

When you skim, you do not stop at every word. Instead, you look at important parts of the page.

  • the title

  • bold words
  • pictures and captions
  • the first sentence in a paragraph
  • the last sentence, sometimes

Skimming helps you answer questions like these:

  • What is this page mostly about?
  • Will this book or article help me?
  • Which part should I read more carefully?

What is scanning?

Scanning means looking quickly for one exact piece of information.

When you scan, your eyes move over the page to find a special word, number, name, or date. You are not trying to read the whole text. You are trying to spot the answer.

Scanning helps you answer questions like these:

  • When did something happen?
  • What is the name of the animal?
  • How many legs does it have?
  • Where does it live?

Skimming and scanning are different.

  • Skimming = find the main idea
  • Scanning = find one specific fact

Think of it this way:

  • Skimming is like looking at a whole map to see where you are going.

Clue: A heading is a title for one section of a text. A bold word is a dark, thick word that stands out.

Question: Which heading should you read if you want to learn about turtle homes?

Skim the headings: You do not need to read every section. You just look at the headings.

When we do research, we should not believe every source right away. We need to ask questions and think carefully.

A credible source is a source that is likely to be true, fair, and helpful.

Why does this matter?

If we use information that is wrong, our research project may also be wrong. Good researchers try to find information they can trust.

Questions to Ask About a Source

  • Who made it? Is the author, speaker, or group named?
  • Do they know the topic? Are they a teacher, scientist, park worker, doctor, or another person who studies or works with the topic?
  • When was it made? Is the information new enough for your topic?
  • Does it match other sources? Do other books or websites say the same thing?
  • Is it trying to teach or just sell? A source that only wants you to buy something may not be the best source for facts.
  • Does it sound fair and careful? Good sources use facts, not wild guesses.

1. Check who made the source.

A source is often stronger when you know who wrote it or made it. If no name is given, be careful.

For example, a book about frogs written by a scientist is often more trustworthy than a random post online with no author.

2. Check if the person knows the topic.

Think about the author's job or experience. A veterinarian knows a lot about animal health. A weather scientist knows a lot about storms.

This does not mean other people can never share facts. It just means experts are often a safer choice for research.

3. Check the date.

Some topics change over time. Information about space, health, or technology should be fairly recent.

If you are learning about a historical event, an older book may still be useful. But you should still check that it is accurate.

4. Compare with other sources.

One source alone is not always enough. Good researchers look at more than one source.

If two or three good sources say the same fact, that fact is more likely to be correct.

5. Watch out for opinions.

A fact is something that can be checked. An opinion is what someone thinks or feels.

For research, facts are very important. Opinions can be included, but they should not be the only thing you use.

6. Notice if the source is trying to sell something.

The library book is more credible.

Which sentence is better for research?

The first sentence is better for research.

Why?

Nina is researching planets. She finds two sources:

  1. A space website updated last year.
  2. A booklet about planets from 25 years ago.

Which source may be better?

The newer website may be better.

Why?

  • Space research changes as people learn more.
  • A newer source may have more up-to-date facts.

Nina should still check who made the website and compare it with another good source.

Owen is researching healthy snacks.

He finds:

Paraphrasing to Avoid Plagiarism

When we do research, we read books, articles, or websites to learn new facts. Then we share what we learned in our own writing.

Paraphrasing means saying information again in your own words. You keep the same meaning, but you change the words and the way the sentence is written.

Plagiarism means copying someone else’s words and pretending they are your own. That is not fair or honest. Good writers learn from sources, then write the ideas in a new way.

Paraphrasing helps you:

  • show that you understand what you read,
  • write in your own voice,
  • use facts in an honest way.

Important idea: When you paraphrase, you do not just change one or two words. You must change the sentence a lot while keeping the same meaning.

Here are the steps for paraphrasing:

  1. Read the sentence carefully.
  2. Think: “What does this mean?”
  3. Cover the sentence or look away.
  4. Say it aloud in your own words.
  5. Write your new sentence.
  6. Check that it means the same thing but does not copy the original wording.

Good paraphrasing means you may change:

  • some of the words,
  • the order of the ideas,
  • the way the sentence starts,
  • one long sentence into two shorter sentences.

But you should not change the fact itself. The meaning must stay the same.

Source sentence: Dolphins are smart animals that live in the ocean.

Too close to the source: Dolphins are intelligent animals that live in the ocean.

This is too close because most of the sentence stayed the same. Only one word changed.

Better paraphrase: Dolphins are clever sea animals.

This is better because the sentence is shorter, the wording is different, and the meaning stays the same.

Source sentence: Bees collect nectar from flowers to make honey.
