Formulating Research Questions

Formulating Research Questions means making good questions before you start learning about a topic.

For example, if your topic is butterflies, that is a big topic. You can learn many things about butterflies. A research question helps make the topic smaller and clearer.

Good researchers ask questions first. Then they read books, look at pictures, listen, or watch videos to find answers.

A question like "Is my dog cute?" is not a strong research question. It is mostly an opinion.

A better question is "What do dogs need to stay healthy?" This is clear, and you can find facts to answer it.

Question words can help.

  • What — What do frogs eat?
  • Where — Where do penguins live?
  • When — When do bears sleep for winter?
  • Why — Why do leaves change color?
  • How — How does a seed grow?

These question words help you make questions that can be answered with facts.

Start with a topic, then make questions.

  1. Pick a topic.

You might ask:

  • What do plants need to grow?
  • How does water help plants?
  • Where do plants make seeds?

All of these are good research questions. They are clear, and they can be answered with facts.

How to check your question

Ask yourself:

  • Does my question match my topic?
  • Is my question clear?
  • Can I find facts to answer it?
  • Is it small enough to study?

If you answer yes to these questions, your research question is probably strong.

1. Know what you are looking for

Before you begin, ask yourself: What do I want to learn?

Your question helps you choose the best source. If your topic is frogs, you might ask:

  • Where do frogs live?
  • What do frogs eat?
  • How do frogs grow?

When you know your question, it is easier to find the right information.

2. Use print sources

Print sources are helpful because they are organized and easy to look through slowly.

Encyclopedias are books with facts about many topics. They usually put topics in alphabetical order.

If you want to learn about bears, you would look under the letter B.

Trade books are nonfiction books about one topic. A trade book about weather may tell you many facts about rain, snow, clouds, and storms.

Print books often have special parts that help you find information:

  • Table of contents — shows the chapters or sections at the front of the book
  • Headings — titles for parts of the text

Ask yourself:

  • Does this source match my topic?

5. Look for relevant information

Relevant information means information that fits your topic and answers your question.

If your question is What do penguins eat?, then these facts are relevant:

  • Penguins eat fish.
  • Penguins also eat squid.

But this fact is not relevant to that question:

  • Penguins have feathers.

That fact may be true, but it does not answer the question about food.

6. Use text features to find facts

Text features are parts of a book or webpage that help you find and understand information.

  • Titles tell the main topic.
  • Headings tell what a section is about.
  • Bold words stand out and may be important.
  • Captions explain pictures.
  • Labels name parts of a picture.

If you are reading about plants and see a heading called How Plants Grow, that is a good place to look if your question is about plant growth.

Question: You want to learn about lions. Where should you look in an encyclopedia?

Step 1: Think about the first letter in lions. It is L.

Step 2: Find the part of the encyclopedia with words that begin with L.

How can you tell if a fact is relevant?

    Ask yourself, “What am I trying to learn?”

  2. Read one fact at a time.

    If yes, keep it. If no, leave it out.

Irrelevant fact: “A fire truck is often red.” That tells about the truck’s color, not the firefighter’s job.

Research question: Why do birds build nests?

Source facts:

  • Birds build nests to lay eggs and keep their babies safe.

  • Some nests are made of twigs and grass.

  • Many birds sing in the morning.

  • Nests can protect eggs from wind and rain.

Think it through:

The question asks why birds build nests. We need reasons.

Relevant facts: “Birds build nests to lay eggs and keep their babies safe” and “Nests can protect eggs from wind and rain.”

Irrelevant facts: “Some nests are made of twigs and grass” and “Many birds sing in the morning.” These facts do not tell why birds build nests.

Watch out for extra information.

Sometimes a source has one useful sentence and one extra sentence. You do not have to take everything. You can choose only the part that answers your question.

For example, if your question is When do bats sleep? and the source says, “Bats sleep during the day and fly out at night,” the part “sleep during the day” is the most relevant part because it answers when.

A simple trick: Match the fact to the question.

  • Question about place → keep facts about place.

  • Question about time → keep facts about time.

  • Question about reason → keep facts about reason.

  • Question about action → keep facts about action.

Synthesizing Information means putting ideas together from two or more sources.

A source is where we get information. A source can be a book, an article, a video, a photo, or a person speaking.

When we synthesize, we do not copy just one source. We read, watch, or listen to more than one source. Then we mix the important ideas together to learn more about a topic.

This helps us build a bigger and clearer understanding.

For example, one book about frogs may tell what frogs eat. A video about frogs may show where frogs live. When we put those facts together, we understand frogs better.

Why do we synthesize information?

  • We learn more from more than one source.
  • We can find new details.
  • We can notice when two sources say the same thing.
  • We can make a fuller picture in our minds.

How to synthesize information

  1. Pick a topic.
    Example: butterflies.
  2. Look at two or more sources.
    Example: a book and a short video.
  3. Take notes.
    Write short facts from each source.
  4. Find ideas that go together.
    Ask: What facts match? What new facts did I learn?
  5. Put the ideas together in your own words.
    Tell what you learned from all the sources.

Good readers ask questions while they synthesize:

  • What did source 1 teach me?
  • What did source 2 teach me?
  • What is the same?
  • What is different?
  • What do I know now after reading both?

Important: Synthesizing is not just listing facts. It is combining facts to show understanding.

Look at this difference:

  • Just listing facts: Bees drink nectar. Bees live in hives.
  • Synthesizing: Bees live in hives and collect nectar from flowers, so they work together to make honey.

In the second example, the facts are joined into one bigger idea.

Think: Both facts tell how cats move and find things.

Synthesized idea: Cats have special body parts that help them move safely, like whiskers and eyes that work well at night.

  • Finding important ideas.
  • Putting those ideas together in your own words.
  • Showing a bigger understanding of the topic.

  • I learned from one source that ____.
  • Another source taught me ____.
  • Putting these ideas together, I now know ____.
  • Both sources show that ____.
  • These sources help me understand that ____.

Media Message Analysis means thinking carefully about messages we see and hear in videos, ads, pictures, and online media.

When we analyze a media message, we ask: Who made this? Why did they make it? How do the pictures, words, music, and sounds help the message?

This helps us become smart readers, viewers, and listeners. It helps us understand when someone wants to teach us, entertain us, or persuade us to do something.

What is media?

Media is a way to share messages with many people. Media can be:

  • TV commercials
  • online videos
  • posters
  • ads in magazines
  • pictures with words
  • songs or sound clips

Every media message is made by a person or a group. That creator has a reason for making it.

The creator's purpose

The creator's purpose is the reason the message was made. In 2nd grade, there are 3 big purposes to remember:

  • To inform — to teach or tell facts
  • To entertain — to make people laugh, smile, or enjoy watching
  • To persuade — to get people to think, feel, or do something

Sometimes a media message can do more than one of these, but usually one purpose is the strongest.

Clues that show the purpose

We can look and listen for clues.

  • If it has facts, labels, or directions, it may inform.
  • If it tells a funny story or has silly characters, it may entertain.
  • If it says things like “Buy this!” or “Try this!” it may persuade.

How visuals help the message

Visuals are the things we see. Visuals include:

  • colors
  • pictures
  • faces
  • actions
  • size of words
  • movement on a screen

Visuals can change how we feel about a message.

  • Bright colors can feel exciting and happy.
  • Big bold words can feel important.
  • A smiling child can make something seem fun.
  • A close-up picture can make us pay attention.

How audio helps the message

Audio is what we hear. Audio can include:

  • a person's voice
  • cheering
  • animal sounds

Audio can also change how we feel.

  • Fast, happy music can make a product seem fun.

  • Loud sound effects can grab our attention.

Questions to ask when analyzing media

When you look at an ad, video, or digital picture, you can ask:

  1. What do I see?
  2. What do I hear?
  3. Who made this?
  4. What is the creator trying to do?
  5. How do the pictures help the message?
  6. How do the sounds help the message?
  7. What does the creator want me to think, feel, or do?

You see a poster for apple slices. The poster has bright red apples, a big smiling face, and the words Crunch! Sweet! Fresh!

Step 1: What do we see?

We see bright colors, apples, and happy words.

Step 2: What is the purpose?

The purpose is mostly to persuade. The creator wants people to want the apple slices.

Step 3: How do visuals help?

The shiny apples and smiling face make the food look tasty and fun.

Step 4: How do words help?

Words like sweet and fresh make the apples sound good to eat.

Answer: This media message is trying to persuade people to eat or buy the apple slices.

Worked Example 2: A short animal video

You watch a video about penguins. A narrator says facts about where penguins live and what they eat. Soft music plays in the background.

Step 1: What do we see and hear?

We see penguins swimming and walking. We hear facts and soft music.

Step 2: What is the purpose?

The purpose is mostly to inform because the video teaches facts.

Step 3: How do visuals help?

The penguin videos help us understand the facts better.

Step 4: How does audio help?

The narrator's voice teaches the facts. The soft music helps the video feel calm and interesting.

Answer: This media message informs the viewer by using real pictures and spoken facts.

Worked Example 3: A toy commercial

You see a commercial for a race car toy. The toy zooms across the screen. There is loud, fast music. Children are laughing and cheering. The announcer says, The fastest car ever!

Step 1: What is the purpose?

The purpose is to persuade. The commercial wants people to want the toy.

Step 2: How do visuals help?

The fast-moving car and excited children make the toy look thrilling and fun.

Step 3: How does audio help?
