Before you begin reading a text, your brain is already able to do important thinking. Good readers do not wait until the first paragraph to start understanding. They look at clues before reading so they can prepare for what the text might be about, how it might be organized, and what ideas might matter most.
This skill is called using pre-reading schemas and making textual predictions. It helps you read more actively, understand more deeply, and notice important details as you go.
What is a schema?
A schema is a mental framework. It is the background knowledge, experiences, and expectations you already have about a topic, a genre, or a type of text. When you see a title like The Effects of Social Media on Teen Sleep, your mind may already connect ideas such as phones, bedtime habits, blue light, and health. Those connections form a schema.
Schemas help readers organize new information. Instead of reading every sentence as if it is completely unfamiliar, you connect new ideas to what you already know. This makes reading faster, clearer, and more meaningful.
What are textual predictions?
Textual predictions are smart guesses you make about a text before and during reading. These guesses are not random. They are based on evidence from the text’s clues, such as its title, headings, pictures, captions, author note, opening lines, or structure.
For example, if a passage is called Into the Eye of the Storm and includes a photo of dark clouds and broken trees, you might predict that the text will describe a dangerous weather event, possibly from a personal point of view or in dramatic detail.
Why pre-reading matters
Pre-reading is useful because it gives you a purpose for reading. Instead of entering a text with no direction, you enter with questions and expectations. As you read, you can check whether your predictions are correct, partly correct, or incorrect.

3. Images, captions, charts, and other visual features
Visual features can reveal topic, mood, and key ideas. A chart may suggest that the text includes data. A painting or photograph may suggest a setting, time period, or emotional tone.
If a nonfiction article includes a map, labels, and a timeline, you can predict that the text may explain change over time or describe a sequence of events.
4. Headings and subheadings
Headings break a text into sections. They help you predict what each part will discuss. In nonfiction, they often reveal the text structure directly.

5. Text structure
The structure of a text gives major clues about how ideas will be developed. Different structures lead readers to expect different kinds of information.
- Chronological order: events are told in time order.
- Cause and effect: one event leads to another.
- Problem and solution: a problem is presented, then possible answers.
- Compare and contrast: two or more ideas are examined together.
- Description: details explain a topic, person, place, or idea.
In literature, structure also matters. A diary format may suggest a personal voice. A play script suggests dialogue and stage action. A poem with short lines may suggest that imagery and word choice are especially important.
6. Opening sentences or introduction
The first lines often establish tone, setting, and purpose. If a story begins with, By the time the sirens started, everyone in town already knew something was wrong, you can predict tension, conflict, and a dramatic event.
If an article begins with a statistic, the author may be trying to inform or persuade using evidence.
How to activate schema before reading
Activating schema means waking up what you already know. This does not mean you know everything about the text. It means you bring useful background knowledge to the reading process.
- Look at the title and visuals.
- Ask yourself what you already know about the topic.
- Notice the type of text: story, poem, article, speech, essay, biography, or something else.
- Predict the author’s purpose: to inform, entertain, explain, or persuade.
- Predict what ideas, conflicts, or themes may appear.
Questions you can ask before reading
- What do I already know about this topic?
- What kind of text does this appear to be?
- Who seems to be the audience?
- What is the author probably trying to do?
- What tone do the title and visuals suggest?

The difference between a strong prediction and a weak prediction
A strong prediction is based on clear evidence from the text. A weak prediction is based only on a guess or a personal opinion with no support.
- Weak prediction: “This article will be boring.”
- Strong prediction: “Because the article has headings about causes, effects, and prevention, I predict it will explain a health issue in an organized way.”
Strong predictions use clues. They also stay flexible. If the text proves you wrong, you revise your thinking.
Worked Example 1: Simple nonfiction prediction

Step 2: Make predictions
- This text will probably be informational and research-based.
- It will likely explain connections between screen use and attention, sleep, and mood.
- Because it includes a graph and expert quotations, the author will probably support ideas with evidence rather than opinion alone.
- The article may not say all screen time is bad; it may present a balanced discussion of effects.
Why these predictions are strong: The subtitle gives specific topics, and the graph and expert quotations suggest an evidence-based article.
Worked Example 4: Comparing predictions and revising them
Text clues:
- Title: Crossing the Line
- No image
- First paragraph describes a runner waiting for a race to begin.
First prediction:
- This text is probably about a sports competition.
- The phrase crossing the line may mean finishing a race.
After reading more: The second page reveals that the runner is deciding whether to cheat by taking a shortcut.
Revised prediction:
- The title has both a literal and a figurative meaning.
- The story is not just about sports; it is also about ethics and choices.
